Research

The Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology brings together researchers exploring fundamental questions in biology across multiple scales, from the structure and function of molecules to the organization and behavior of cells, tissues, and organisms.

Our faculty investigate a broad range of biological processes using cutting-edge approaches in biochemistry, cell biology, structural biology, genetics, computational biology, imaging, and molecular and cellular analysis. This work advances understanding of the mechanisms that drive life, health, and disease while laying the foundation for future therapies and biomedical innovations.

As part of Duke University School of Medicine's collaborative research community, faculty work closely with investigators across basic science and clinical departments to address complex scientific challenges. The department's breadth of expertise, combined with access to world-class core facilities, shared technologies, and interdisciplinary partnerships, creates an environment where discoveries move seamlessly across scientific disciplines and levels of biological organization.

Through curiosity-driven research, technological innovation, and collaborative science, the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology is advancing knowledge that will shape the future of biomedical research and human health.
