Education & Training

The Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology offers exceptional training in a collaborative, research-intensive environment. Building on a legacy that includes Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, membership in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and faculty leadership in the National Academy of Sciences, the department provides students and trainees with opportunities to learn alongside some of the world's leading biomedical researchers.

Our graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and medical trainees pursue research spanning molecular structure and mechanism, cellular organization and signaling, development, genetics, and disease. Through close mentorship and interdisciplinary collaboration, trainees gain the scientific expertise, critical-thinking skills, and research experience needed for successful careers in academia, industry, government, and other scientific professions.

Graduate Education

Students in the department train through Duke's biomedical PhD programs, developing a strong foundation in both coursework and laboratory research. Early training emphasizes broad scientific exploration and lab rotations, followed by focused dissertation research under the guidance of faculty mentors. Throughout their training, students are supported by a community committed to scientific excellence, professional development, and career success.

Professional Development

Beyond the laboratory, we support professional growth through leadership development, career exploration, teaching opportunities, and workshops designed to prepare trainees for a wide range of career paths. Our goal is to cultivate not only outstanding scientists, but also future leaders in research, education, and innovation.

A Collaborative Training Environment

As part of Duke University School of Medicine, the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology is integrated into one of the nation's leading biomedical research communities. Our location and partnerships across departments, centers, and institutes create opportunities for interdisciplinary research, shared learning, and scientific discovery. Trainees benefit from access to world-class facilities, diverse expertise, and a culture that values collaboration, mentorship, and intellectual curiosity.
